The
attraction for Sukau Rainforest Lodge
visitors are the chances to get close to the wildlife. Much of the
wildlife watching in the Sukau area occurs from the waterways. People
in boats can approach animals easily and quietly with small electric
motors and the well-trained guides always have a ready explanation of
what the visitor is seeing. This was the first lodge to identify the
environmental and aesthetic benefits of using electric motors when the
boats were approaching wildlife.
Visitors
to the Lodge are also encouraged to participate in activities and
customs that expose them more fully to the local community and
culture. Visitors are invited to take their shoes off each time they
come into the Lodge. In addition to a welcome drink and briefing by
the manager, each guest will find a neatly folded 'sarong' on their
bed on their arrival. While some may wonder in jest if this is the
Malaysian equivalent of a bath robe, it is in fact their dinner
attire. Guests are given a demonstration by one of the staff on how to
wear this traditional Malaysian garment. Fastening it securely
requires a little practice and visitors listen carefully lest their
carelessness results in a loose sarong and some unexpected breezes at
dinner! Visitors often find this custom a great ice-breaker with
fellow guests and a chance to feel more connected to the Malaysian
culture.
